What are the Different Types of Gears

A gearbox, also referred to as a gear drive, serves three primary functions: increasing torque from the motor to the driven equipment, reducing the motor-generated speed and changing the direction of rotating shafts. The connection between the equipment and the gearbox can be established using various methods such as couplings, belts, chains, or hollow shaft connections. At the core of a gearbox are the gears, working in pairs to effectively transmit power. In this article, we will discuss the main types of gears.

Spur Gears

Spur gears are the workhorses of gear drives, transmitting power through parallel shafts. With teeth aligned parallel to the shaft axis, these gears generate radial reaction loads without causing axial loads. While efficient, they tend to be noisier than their helical counterparts due to a single line of contact between teeth.

Helical Gears

In contrast to spur gears, helical gears feature teeth oriented at an angle to the shaft. This configuration allows multiple teeth to be in contact during operation, enhancing load-bearing capacity and operating smoothly and quietly. The thrust load produced during operation should be considered, making helical gears a common choice for enclosed gear drives.

Double Helical Gears

Double helical gears take the efficiency of helical gears a step further by placing two helical faces side by side, eliminating thrust loads. This arrangement enables increased tooth overlap, resulting in even smoother operation. Like helical gears, double helical gears find common usage in enclosed gear drives.

Herringbone Gears

Similar to double helical gears, herringbone gears feature two helical faces but without a gap. Ideal for high shock and vibration applications, these gears are smaller than their double helical counterparts. However, their limited use is attributed to manufacturing difficulties and higher costs.

Bevel Gears

Bevel gears come into play when power transmission is needed between shafts intersecting at a 90-degree angle. Although more costly and with a lower torque transmission capability per size compared to parallel shaft arrangements, bevel gears are indispensable in applications requiring a right-angle gear drive.

Worm Gears

Worm gears excel at transmitting power through right angles on non-intersecting shafts. While suitable for high shock load applications, their efficiency is comparatively low. Consequently, worm gears are commonly employed in lower horsepower scenarios.

Hypoid Gears

Hypoid gears operate on non-intersecting shafts. The unique arrangement, with the pinion set on a different plane than the gear, ensures support from bearings on either end of the shaft, offering efficiency in unconventional applications.

Conclusion

In conclusion, understanding each gear type is essential for selecting the right gearbox for specific applications. From the simplicity of spur gears to the complexity of herringbone gears, different types of gears serve the varied needs of industries across the globe.
